A former British Army officer for 19 years including an 18 month sabbatical working in marine insurance. Following a masters degree from Aberdeen University in international relations and strategic studies, he has worked as an Advisor to a number of UK Government Departments including the MoD, Home Office, FCO and DfID working on risk and security strategy, principally in conflict and post conflict environments including Sierra Leone Ethiopia, and Afghanistan. 

Between 2004 and 2012 he was Private Secretary in the Royal Household. On leaving the Household he jointly established an organisation that promoted the potential of the Commonwealth trade, particularly in the maritime domain. He has been involved in various trade related maritime initiatives since 2012. 

He currently runs his own international Advisory Service. Amongst his recent clients has been a Strategic Communications company working with HNI's on philanthropic risk, and a global food distribution company. He is currently advising a global port and logistics company on maritime resilience in the Indian Ocean. He has a research interest in the multi-domain geopolitics of the maritime space.
