Dr Roxana Ciurean is a Senior Geohazard Scientist at the British Geological Survey (UKRI), specialising in multi-risk assessment, disaster risk resilience, and the application of risk information to decision-making. Her work focuses on understanding how natural hazards interact spatially and temporally and with exposure, vulnerability, and socio-economic factors to create complex risks for communities, infrastructure, and the built environment.

Roxana holds a PhD in Geography from the University of Vienna, where she developed methods for assessing vulnerability and losses to hydro-meteorological hazards. She has since contributed to major UK and international research programmes funded by the European Commission, the European Space Agency, and FCDO, and to projects in Europe and Asia investigating climate-related and multi-hazard risks. Her recent work combines Earth Observation, systems thinking, and risk modelling to assess the impacts of cascading and compound hazards and support evidence-based resilience planning.

As a UKRI Policy Fellow with the Scottish Government, Roxana examined how risk information is used in policy development, planning, and responses to disruptive events. She works closely with governments, infrastructure operators, and communities to bridge the gap between science, policy, and practice, helping organisations make better-informed decisions about resilience and adaptation in an increasingly uncertain climate.
